Simple Frequent Questions

    • Sharing a Block with someone does not mean you have to interact with them in any way if you don’t want to. It simply means there will be another person helping to share the load and keep your area clean.

    • That said, if you feel comfortable doing so, we believe there are many benefits to connecting with your Joint Block Ambassador:

      • Having another person cleaning up will help lighten the load on your block.

      • A Joint BA can help cover your block responsibilities when you are out of town, sick, or simply unable to get out and clean up.

      • If you want, your Joint BA can be a cleaning buddy if you feel like socializing with a like-minded individual.

    • Our goal is to create a pathway for volunteers to connect with one another and communicate in a safe way that is outside of regular social media platforms.

    • It is an “opt in” feature meaning that you do not have to participate in Direct Messaging if you don’t want to!

  • Someone may not be interested in knowing and/or connecting with their more immediate neighbors for a variety of personal reasons and we wanted to give folks the option to stay connected with other Block Ambassadors across their neighborhood.

  • Having two blocks in different neighborhoods and/or zip codes won’t affect your DM options other than “doubling” the amount of people you can potentially communicate with.

  • Direct Messaging is set up so that up to 3 people can share a group message with one another to talk about all things related to AdoptOneBlock. This could include simply introducing yourself to other BA’s, social chatting, or planning a cleanup with others.

If you wish to communicate with a larger group of people, we encourage you to take the conversation to your personal emails and/or a group text.

  • You can’t preemptively “mute” someone who has never contacted you, however, once someone has sent you a message, you can then choose to “mute” them so you no longer see their communications.

Other Frequent Questions

What exactly do Joint, Nearby, and Neighborhood boundaries mean?

These titles define how broad you want your Direct Message communications to be based on your adopted block location.

  • JOINT: Blocks can now be adopted by TWO individuals, forming “Joint” Block Ambassadors, to support cleanup efforts.

  • NEARBY: “Nearby” Ambassadors are within 275 yards radius – roughly 2-3 blocks in any direction of your block(s).

  • NEIGHBORHOOD: “Neighborhood” Ambassadors are within your defined neighborhood (via GIS mapping) or defaults to your specific zip code.

Why are there red hearts on the Heat Map now instead of red dots?

  • We updated our map design to better reflect the fact that now TWO people can formally adopt a block rather than just one person. This will double our capacity for volunteers and allow for a more robust cleaning cadence.

  • A full red heart = a fully adopted block (2 people)

  • A half red heart = 1 person has adopted the block, with room for one more person
